Royal Swedish Academy of Science announced £823,000 prize for Noble Prize Winners in Medicine Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman.
These two great Scientists have been given the 2023 Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing mRNA backed COVID-19 vaccine.
Professor Drew Weissman and Katalin Karikó discovered nucleoside-led modifications which created the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine.
The main function of this vaccine was to transfer the genetic instructions for creating viral protein into the cells of humans. This protein is quite effective against the COVID-19 virus.
The early development of synthetic mRNA-based caused inflammatory reactions which were not suitable for medical usage.
What these two scientists together did was quite an unusual and groundbreaking discovery of changing chemical mRNA-led molecule ending the inflammatory responses. It become the basis of Pfizer and other covid vaccines.
The successful creation of this mRNA-led COVID-19 vaccine reduced the deaths and illnesses during the pandemic.
Karikó is a Hungarian scientist, she grew up in a small town in Hungary and had a tough early life. Once she received her postdoctoral degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Szeged, and then she moved to the US along with her family.
In the US as she continued his research, she met Prof. Weissman, who is a professor of vaccine research at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Their research together led to the discovery of mRNA-based Vaccines.
