MiG-17 NATO code Name (“Fresco”) was developed back in the Soviet Union in the 1950s to replace their ageing MiG-15 used in the Korean War. While visually similar, it featured sharper wing sweep, a longer fuselage, an afterburner, and improved speed and handling. The prototype first flew in January 1950, production began in late 1951,and operational aircraft appeared in 1952.
At least five variants were produced at that time, and the MiG-17 eventually equipped the air forces of more than 20 nations. During the Cold War, it later saw combat against U.S. aircraft in Southeast Asia.
North Vietnam formed its first MiG-17 unit, the 921st Fighter Regiment, in February 1964 after pilot training in China, and also operated Chinese-built J-5 versions. U.S. pilots relied on superior speed to counter the MiG-17’s agility.
MiG-17 vs MiG-15
MiG-17 was developed from MiG-15 as it is more advanced avionics and superior fighter against American fighter jets during the Vietnam War.
